Market Niche: Cataclysm Raw Gems

(Run time: 16:42) (added December 12th 2010)

The Cataclysm era gems follow the same kind of pattern we have seen before in Wrath of the Lich King and Burning Crusade times. There are 6 new uncommon (“green”) gems, and 6 new rare (“blue”) gems. Eventually we will see epic gems for the highest level as well.

The game has realigned stats with respect to how they align with the gem colors. In general, this has made the gem system more flexible, and I suspect it may lead to greater use of gems among the general game population (as opposed to hardcore raiders and PvP’ers).

In the early trading, a couple of very clear “A List” items have emerged, and I suggest you focus your attention on these:

  • Hessonite (uncommon)
  • Nightstone (uncommon)
  • Inferno Ruby (rare)

You can make a lot of gold fast in the Gems market niche; it’s huge. I’m not even close to being an expert in this market, yet some of my best profit pipelines are in gems. Get the general lay of the land (and the gold-making potentials) with this earlier market niche video that dates back to the days of Vanilla WoW and Burning Crusade.

      INFERNO RUBY

From my test prospecting (see previous comment), I’ve found that the best way to get Inferno Rubies is not to prospect, but to buy Carnelian x 3 and Heartblossom x 3 and transmute Inferno Rubies using Alchemy.

      On my server, anyway!

      PROSPECTING FOR CATA GEMS.
The tooltips suggest that prospecting Obsidium ore is better, as you show in the Cata gem video. I’ve done some test runs and found the opposite to be true. Here are sample results.

Prospect 6 stacks of ore at a time. Here are sample results, using the same posting prices for the gems.

      Elementium Ore.
      - Tooltip drop rates: 18% for greens, 4% for blues.
      - 35 gems
      - Gross profit: 533g

      Obsidium Ore.
-Tooltip drop rates: 25% for greens, 1.3% for blues.
      - 42 gems
      - Gross profit: 274g (another test gave 155g profit).

Gross profit excludes AH cut and multiple postings needed to sell all raw gems.

I was surprised by these results, but there you go.

Other people I’ve talked to have similar results.

Elementium ore is the way to go, tooltip notwithstanding.
